The significance of materials science in modern world and human history

Abstract

At the end of the 1990s Yu. M. Taran established providing of education on a major, that was new within metallurgical academy – in the field of Materials Science & Engineering, and this happened at the Materials Science department. The author is one of the first graduate within this specialty. In this paper the author’s vision of what materials science is and what significance it has is presented from the point of view based on education and professional experience he’s get. The encyclopedia definitions of materials science, its role in the state-of-the-art technological progress, its significance as a science are discussed. The role of materials and its science in the human history is described briefly.
